Cold War:The whole story is one of respect for each side's sphere of influence.

So, Russia's (or the old Soviet Union's Sphere of influence was wherever their troops went in like Eastern European nations or Afghanistan in the 1980s (except for shoulder fired missiles given to Osama Bin Laden and his people to bring down Soviet helicopters and jets when Bin laden was a CIA operative in the 1980s). (See movie of Charlie Wilson's War: true story).

But, generally speaking Russia stayed out of Viet Nam (sort of) which was between China and North Viet Nam against the U.S.  and Russia (sort of) stayed out of the Korean WAr which was between China and North Korea against the U.S.

Likewise now one of the reasons the U.S. has stayed mostly out of Syria is because since Soviet Union days Syria has been in the Soviet and now Russian sphere of influence. However, the Russians backed off while we went into Iraq (our sphere of influence). However, Iran has always been Russian and Soviet (sphere of influence) so that is a very tricky Cold war (Still) problem for the U.S. but not so much for Israel in the same way. Russia (to some degree) allows some attacks on Iran and Syria by Israel if it feels Israel is just trying to stay in existence doing this.

So, respecting each sides sphere of influence has prevented so far a nuclear war between first the Soviet Union and Now Russia since World war II against the U.S., Canada, Europe and likely Japan and a few others including Great Britain (Europe).
