Missing Malaysia Airlines plane: How were stolen passports used?

Two passengers on missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 were travelling on stolen passports, officials have confirmed.
The passengers -
travelling with Italian and Austrian passports that had been stolen in
Thailand - purchased their plane tickets at the same time, and were both
booked on the same onward flight from Beijing to Europe on Saturday.
But how were they able to board the plane with the invalid documents?

When I was traveling in Asia in India and Nepal and Thailand I noticed as I waited in lines going into one country or another that many westerners in 1985 and 1986 looked very little if at all like the pictures on their passports. I wasn't sure what was going on then. However, after 2001 I have believed this likely changed at least in the EU, Great Britain, the U.S. and Canada and places like Japan and maybe South Korea.
However, often people of a different race are not aware of subtle facial differences of other races. This is a given all over the world. For example, if you are white you might not recognize very much facial qualities of other races and they might not recognize facial differences if you are white either.
So, this is a given all over the world, especially in countries where bribing people to get things done (most of the world) is very very common. So, until more countries check passports better (and this costs more money and time often where the money to do this might not be able to be reconciled (in various countries).
