When Whooping cough is contracted by adults what happens?

I almost died form whooping cough at age 2. So, I can still remember how hopeless and afraid  and terrified a 2 year old can be while coughing and turning blue from it for months. Under three years of age it is often fatal because your lungs aren't developed enough yet. However, over 5 people mostly don't die from it but they might be sick 2 or more months with it if they are exposed to it. Here is some of what I found regarding adults:

To paraphrase what I learned here adults often have it for 2 or more months and often break ribs and throw disks out from violent coughing. But once again it isn't usually fatal to adults (unless Asthma, Cancer or COPD) is also present.

The reason I'm researching this is several junior Highs and High Schools are rampant with whooping cough in the kids here in Northern California now. So, if it is at your school (anywhere USA) or worldwide then hopefully this information gets to you too.

The coughing stage lasts approximately six weeks before subsiding. Prevention by vaccination is of primary importance given the serio... Read More »

In adults antibiotic treatment is recommend, but over the counter medications for cough are usually not effective. The cough in whopping cough can last 2 months or more. See your doctor for more info.
