I think it would be like Texas wanting a vote to separate from the U.S. that was enforced by another country. It's hard to say how this would go.
On the one hand if there was no violence maybe this would be a good thing in that Russia might decide that this was all it needed and let the rest of Ukraine be it's own state.
However, if Ukraine needs Crimea to stay economically viable this could be a problem too. Because losing these port areas completely might devastate the country in regard to foreign trade.
My view mostly is that it might be better if violence doesn't ensue because in the end Ukraine cannot militarily win against Putin, Moscow and Russia in this sense.
However, in the end this would have to be up to the people of Ukraine to decide this.
It is a very strange situation and if Putin actually feels he won here he might try this same tactic other places in his sphere of influence. This could be a problem for older Eastern Block nations of the Cold War that are now free.
