This knife I have seen used while I was in Nepal mostly for chopping meat. It is very heavy so it has weight for chopping up meats to cook over a campfire. But, it is also used as a weapon by Gurka soldiers as well. So, if you go to Nepal you might still see people carrying these knives both for cooking and preparing foods but also for self defense especially in Nepal.
Most countries don't allow people to carry guns. However, most countries do allow people to carry knives for protection still. So, often you will see knives like this (more out in the country) and in cities people carry knives more like (locking blade knives with 4 to 5 inch blades for protection in emergencies. Even Tibetan Monks and Tibetan Lamas (in 1985 and 1986) often carried lock blade knives for protection as they traveled from place to place because of differences of religion between Hindus and Muslims and Buddhists and other religions along the way. The less educated people tend to be the more extreme they tend to be regarding whatever religion they were raised in. So, self defense is often important in Asia especially among the less educated people you might encounter while traveling there.
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
