Looking at the weather map I have seen these things before but they are really strange to look at. First the storm comes in at San Francisco rains up the valley to Redding or so, snows everywhere north of there at altitude like mt. Shasta, heads up as far as Vancouver before heading out to sea and gathering more moisture and coming in again at San Francisco. It's the darndest thing to look at in action now as it spirals gaining and dropping more and more moisture and snow.
Where as further south the Atmospheric river is just like a torrent running full blast towards los Angeles, San Diego and northern Mexico just throwing down water like crazy on into Arizona even passed California all across the nation. It is coming from south of Hawaii somewhere like a never ending atmospheric river of water vapor out of the tropics.
However, interstate 5 is still open as of now or 12:31 pm Friday morning early. Also, 80 is open if you have the right equipment like chains or 4 wheel drives or all wheel drives.
