Russia spent 50 billion dollars to put on the Winter Olympics. (likely money it couldn't afford to spend in that way). Then the puppet government fell in Kiev. Then Putin sent in FSB(old KGB) officers (just like him) into Ukraine along with hired veterans from Chechnya and likely even the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. So, you have Veteran FSB and Veteran soldiers (the kind that know how to aim your kalashnikov sub machine gun in a pattern) "Ahead" of a helicopter to bring it down like the two today.
This whole situation is economically beneficial also to the price of oil which also governs Putin's behavior here.
1st: Putin needs the price of oil to be as high as possible to economically keep Russia on an even enough keel to keep him in power.
2nd: If he cuts off oil and gas to Europe or raises the price of what he is giving them to whatever price he wants he succeeds in bringing more money to himself and Russia.
3rd: So far, the U.S. and Europe have demonstrated no capacity to stop him in any useful way what he is presently doing in Ukraine. (Because open military action likely would eventually result in Nuclear war).
4th: Is Putin Crazy? IF Putin is crazy he is crazy like Stalin (millions dead), crazy like Hitler(millions dead) etc.
5th: The old world paradigm has broken and now we are also witnessing Russia and China doing military exercises together too. Though Russia and China have never been that close they are sort of thinking now (The enemy of my enemy is my friend). And the historical enemy of Russia and China Since World War II has always been The U.S. and Europe and Japan.
6th So, we see another type of division happening right now reminding me of the Allies of World war II and the Axis powers (Germany and Japan) aligning for war or potential war at some time in the near or far future.
7th: However, because of nuclear weapons war cannot look like World War II ever again or there will be no planet left and no life upon it at all. So, war must be only economic and proxy wars and finding a way to stop (the craziness of Putin) through proxy wars. (However, Syria and Ukraine cannot be proxy wars directly because of (Sphere of Influence).
8th: However, Putin is presently beginning to break all the rules of Sphere of Influence and it is here in "Sphere of Influence" where the real fight is going to take place over the next 5, 10, 20 years or more.
This whole thing isn't going to end without some really crazy shit happening worldwide. When things like this happen you just know millions of people are likely going to die from this directly or 100 of millions possibly indirectly through starvation.
If I were to define what this will do to earth I would have to say, "Extreme population reduction because of uncontrolled chaos while Global Climate change gets progressively worse and takes out even more millions of people.
So, is Putin insane? I would say he is crazy like a fox. He is willing to risk your life and almost everyone else's including his own in order to regain the Russian Empire and return to the old Soviet Union.
However, I don't think this is entirely realistic. So, the likely result might just be millions and millions of people are going to die over the next 5 to 20 years around the world mostly in Eastern Europe. (Unless there is a minor or major nuclear war too then it could get much worse).
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
