We aren't as far along as we think we are

This thought occurred to me in the last week. Most of what the human race knows is more of a bluff than anything else. Whether it is in the realm of science or in the realm of philosophy or in the realm of religion or spirituality most of what people know is more of a bluff than anything else. We are sort of like children trying to learn what not to be afraid of in the dark. Sometimes we are successful in overcoming our fears and sometimes our cousin or brother puts a scary mask on and scares the hell out of us by taking advantage of our fears.

So, relatively speaking where are we?

I would say to make more sense of the mental and physical and spiritual development of the human race so far we are sort of like a 21 year old in development. We think we are very adult and that we know everything. However, people 30, 40, 50, and 60 years old and beyond know we really only have the basics and have a whole lot to learn about everything.

The basics (the general framework of life) might be known by a 21 year old, but often it is the subtleties that allow a person (or a civilization) to live to old age (whether that old age is 60 to 100 or 1000 to 5000 or more).

Scientifically speaking people likely will learn how to pass 150 years of age this century with all their marbles while still walking and possibly even driving cars and motorcycles and piloting planes. This seems pretty inevitable. But, just living longer without some useful purpose might not be desirable. So, if you are going to live a long time (individuals or mankind in general) we all better think of worthwhile things to be doing to help ourselves and others to make our longer lives worthwhile.
