At least 3 types of Sectarian War now happening in Middle East and spreading

1. The first type is Shia's killing Sunnis

This began really when Sunnis in Syria wanted more rights there but were killed instead. However, Assad realized I guess that to give Sunnis rights in Syria would lead to the massacre of all Alawite Shias in Syria.

So, he massacred any Sunnis who opposed him and got help from Russia and Iran and Hezbollah to do this at least the last 4 years now.

2. This first war created a 2nd war of groups springing up like ISIS, Boko Haram, Al Shabaab etc. with funding for them from persecuted or killed Sunnis and their sympathizers. So, a Sectarian War was declared to some degree by the entire Sunni Muslim World against all Shia Muslims.

3. The third Sectarian war is Muslims Killing Christians wherever they find them in the Middle East or Africa.

To really understand how powerful these dynamics are and how we might have to deal with all this 10, 20, 30, 50 and even 100 years from now in the middle east you likely should study things like:

Ongoing Sectarian wars between Shias and Sunnis the last 1000 years.

The Christian Crusaders

Vlad the Impaler in Transylvania

The Ottoman Empire

And other such topics to better understand what led to all this.
