Republican presidential politics found their way into the White House state dinner for Canada on Thursday — in the form of Barack Obama jokes about Donald Trump and Ted Cruz.
In making a toast to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Obama said the state visit proved that the United States and Canada share the belief that people can make it if they work hard and play by the rules, no matter where they are born.
"After all, where else could a boy born in Calgary grow up to run for president of the United States?" Obama said, referencing Cruz's birth place.
Obama didn't stop there, turning his comedic gaze to Trump:
"Where else would we see a community like Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, welcoming Americans if the election does not go their way?" Obama cracked. "And to the great credit of their people, Canadians from British Columbia to New Brunswick have, so far, rejected the idea of building a wall to keep out your southern neighbors."
The president added: "We appreciate that ... We can be unruly, I know."
