Even in Christianity Transmission is very important which means to have an unbroken line of teachers all the way back to Jesus. For the most powerful realizations this is always the case. The same is true in Tibetan Buddhism to have an unbroken line of realized beings one is learning through. The reason for this is aura to aura direct transmissions are the powerful essence of any teachings that are true on earth. So, when you receive a direct transmission literally everything in your life will change ever after from this pure and direct transmission and whether you are Christian or Buddhist your profound realizations begin from this moment.
I have heard various Tibetan Lamas and Gurus talk about this and this appears to be how it works: "When you are in the presence of a realized being and you are listening to them speak or even meditating with them in their presence, profound blessings are transmitted directly into your aura and mind and body. So, it is like a whole library of information takes permanent residence in your being. So, when you need ANY or ALL of this divine information it comes forward in Supernatural ways and life changes within and around you as needed by life and God and Buddhas. I constantly experience this now 24 hours a day since the 1980s. So, I understand the experience now when once it was only theoretical.

Transmission and realization
There is a long history of oral transmission of teachings in Tibetan Buddhism. Oral transmissions by lineage holders traditionally can take place in small groups or mass gatherings of listeners and may last for seconds (in the case of a mantra, for example) or months (as in the case of a section of the Tibetan Buddhist canon). It is held that a transmission can even occur without actually hearing, as in Asanga's visions of Maitreya. An emphasis on oral transmission as more important than the printed word derives from the earliest period of Indian Buddhism, when it allowed teachings to be kept from those who should not hear them.[18] Hearing a teaching (transmission) readies the hearer for realization based on it. The person from whom one hears the teaching should have heard it as one link in a succession of listeners going back to the original speaker: the Buddha in the case of a sutra or the author in the case of a book. Then the hearing constitutes an authentic lineage of transmission. Authenticity of the oral lineage is a prerequisite for realization, hence the importance of lineages.
