The pioneer motto I was always taught to live by was: "Prepare for the worst and hope for the best" which was what people did who tended to survive colonizing the U.S. the last 400 years or so. Because often if you prepared for anything you could think of you just might have enough together to survive what actually was going to happen in your life.
And if you didn't do that you might not survive. So, I guess preparing for the worst you might consider might happen gives you a 75% to 90% chance of surviving anything that might happen. Not preparing in that way gives you a 25% to 50% chance of surviving everything in your life.
It isn't just gathering things either, it is mostly gathering the knowledge you will need to survive whatever comes in your life. Likely gathering knowledge is the single most important thing you will do. What is healthy to eat? What is healthy to do? What trades are you most suited to do without wanting to kill yourself from boredom or too much stress? It isn't what other people want you to do that is important at all. It is what you can actually survive doing and want to actually live through.
People who know themselves and know the world around them and choose things they can survive doing are the most likely to survive to old age and be relatively happy. People who don't do these things are often gone already by 20 to 30 years of age.
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
