What is a French Drain?

The simplest form of a French drain is simply a trench you dig strategically to divert water from flooding one area of your property and you dig this trench about 1 to 3 feet deep to divert or to create an underground stream in another direction away from where you don't want it to be (like under your house (especially if you have pier block construction). It might not be as serious if you have a cement slab and that's all without a basement. Where I live in California basements are very rare simply because it doesn't get that cold on the California coast to warrant a basement at all mostly. But, I suppose a French Drain could also keep your basement from flooding under some conditions too.
