and they've named one of Hollywood's hottest directors to helm the new

Coming
off his smash hit Godzilla, Gareth Edwards is confirmed to direct the
upcoming feature, which is scheduled for release on December 16 2016.

Speculation
surrounds the project, as rumoured spin-offs include an origin story of
Han Solo, Jedi master Yoda, and bounty hunter Boba Fett.

While
the project is shrouded in secrecy, fans have been promised that the
spin-off will be a stand-alone film that will tell a story that reaches
beyond the core saga.
In
a statement released on Thursday Gareth, who gained notoriety for his
film Monsters and most recently the smash hit Godzilla, gushed: 'Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew
exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life - join the Rebel
Alliance!'
Adding: 'I could not be more excited & honored to go on this
mission with Lucasfilm.'
In
early May Disney stated that three spin-offs are in the works, but the
studio is remaining close mouthed about the plotlines for the films.
Writing the feature is Gary Whitta, whose previous credits include The Walking Dead and feature film The Book Of Eli.
Whitta
also relased a statement: 'From the moment I first saw the original
movie as a wide-eyed kid, Star Wars has been the single most profound
inspiration to my imagination and to my career as a writer.
Will it be his turn? Boba Fett is rumoured to have a spin-off
'It
is deeply special to me,so to be given the opportunity to contribute to
its ongoing legacy, especially in collaboration with a film-maker as
talented as Gareth, is literally a dream come true.'
He added: 'I'm still pinching myself.'
Meanwhile,
the J.J. Abrams directed Star Wars: Episode VII has already begun
production in Abu Dhabi and is set to hit theatres on December 18 2015.
