The monster mash-up! Star Wars hires Godzilla filmmaker Gareth Edwards to direct new spin-off film

The Star Wars universe is finally getting the monster treatment.
Disney and Lucas film have announced yet another spin-off of the hit franchise and they've named one of Hollywood's hottest directors to helm the new project.
Coming off his smash hit Godzilla, Gareth Edwards is confirmed to direct the upcoming feature, which is scheduled for release on December 16 2016.

While the project is shrouded in secrecy, fans have been promised that the spin-off will be a stand-alone film that will tell a story that reaches beyond the core saga.
In a statement released on Thursday Gareth, who gained notoriety for his film Monsters and most recently the smash hit Godzilla, gushed: 'Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life - join the Rebel Alliance!'
Adding: 'I could not be more excited & honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm.'
In early May Disney stated that three spin-offs are in the works, but the studio is remaining close mouthed about the plotlines for the films.
Writing the feature is Gary Whitta, whose previous credits include The Walking Dead and feature film The Book Of Eli.
Whitta also relased a statement: 'From the moment I first saw the original movie as a wide-eyed kid, Star Wars has been the single most profound inspiration to my imagination and to my career as a writer.

'It is deeply special to me,so to be given the opportunity to contribute to its ongoing legacy, especially in collaboration with a film-maker as talented as Gareth, is literally a dream come true.'
He added: 'I'm still pinching myself.'
Meanwhile, the J.J. Abrams directed Star Wars: Episode VII has already begun production in Abu Dhabi and is set to hit theatres on December 18 2015.
