SAN JOSE -- For the first time this year, Santa Clara and San Mateo counties have reported Zika virus cases.
The counties recorded one case each by Friday, both linked to
individuals who contracted the mosquito-borne virus while traveling
outside the United States.
According to the California Department of Public Health, which
updates the number of Zika cases on its website each week, the Golden
State now has a total of 30 cases from 2015 through Friday.
The website said that 29 people contracted Zika while traveling outside the U.S.
In late March, a San Diego County woman was diagnosed with the first confirmed case of Zika virus acquired in California.
San Diego County public health officials said the woman came down
with the virus in February after having sex with a Zika-infected man who
had just returned from a trip to Colombia. The woman was not pregnant
and had not traveled out of the country. She and her partner have fully
recovered.
In addition to the two new South Bay cases, two cases have been
reported in Alameda County; three in Contra Costa County, and one each
in San Francisco and Napa counties.
To date, no Zika virus cases caused by bites from local mosquitoes have been confirmed in California.
