Amtrak train struck backhoe at 106 mph in fatal de...
If you have ever driven a backhoe (I drove them in 1978 when I was working as a Landscaping Contractor in Rancho Santa Fe and La Jolla). I was working with a Bobcat and backhoe at the time and driving both that I had rented on about 100 acres of Orange groves going in so I was using an auger that was about 18 inches in diameter to dig holes for orange trees to be planted with the Bobcat and using the forward weight of the Bobcat by lifting the weight up onto the auger to drill orange tree holes to plant the trees and digging a swimming pool with the Backhoe for the folks who owned the land there and other landscaping.
So, this is a very noisy thing to drive because the hydraulics that move the bucket and backhoe make so much noise. So, it is very easy to understand why they were faced the other direction going forward on the backhoe and didn't see or hear the Amtrak train. They just died instantly when hit by anything hitting them from behind at 106 miles per hour.
The real question is why weren't they told about this train coming? This is the real question here. If you were working on the track why wouldn't you know or have been told when a train was going to come through there at 106 mph. ?
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
