The wins for Cruz and Sanders are likely to reshape the races for the two candidates, who are both battling for an uphill shot at unseating their parties’ front-runners.
The Republican race — a crushing defeat for front-runner Donald Trump — was called just moments after polls closed at 9 p.m. Eastern time.

With 82% of the state’s precincts reporting, Cruz had the support of 49% of Wisconsin GOP voters, compared with just 34% for Trump. Ohio Gov. John Kasich got 14%.
“Here in Wisconsin, the hardworking men and women stood and campaigned tirelessly to make sure tonight was a victory for Americans everywhere,” Cruz said at a rally in Milwaukee.
“We’re winning because we’re uniting the Republican Party. Tonight is about unity, and tonight is about hope,” he added, before predicting the win would ultimately deliver the party’s nomination to him.

“Either before the convention in Cleveland, or at the convention ... together we will win a majority of the delegates, and together we will beat Hillary Clinton in November,” he said.
Cruz’s victory advances the increasingly aggressive effort to prevent Trump from securing the 1,237 delegates he needs before the party’s July convention to win the Republican presidential nomination outright.
Trump did not speak following his loss, but issued a harshly worded statement via his campaign.
“Ted Cruz is worse than a puppet, he is a Trojan horse, being used by the party bosses attempting to steal the nomination from Mr. Trump,” the statement read. “We have total confidence that Mr. Trump will go on to win New York, where he holds a substantial lead in all the polls, and beyond.”
CLINTON, SANDERS AGREE ON DATE FOR NEW YORK'S PRIMARY DEBATE
On the Democratic side, Sanders — in front of Clinton 56% to 43%, with 85% of the state’s precincts counted — was poised to head into New York’s April 19 primary with enormous momentum, a message he touted at a victory rally in Wyoming, which holds a Democratic caucus Saturday.
“What momentum is about is that all across the country the American people are looking around them, and they understand that real change in our country’s history ... never, ever takes place from the top on down. It always takes place from the bottom on up,” Sanders said.
Before the Wisconsin primary, Clinton led Sanders 1,712 to 1,011, including superdelegates. To win the nomination, a candidate needs 2,383.
Wisconsin’s 96 Democratic delegates will be awarded on a proportional basis.
