Bernie Sanders and Ted Cruz both took home the big cheese in America’s Dairyland on Tuesday, as Wisconsin voters overwhelmingly threw their support to the underdogs in each party and upended the presidential race — again.
The wins for Cruz and Sanders are likely to reshape the races for the two candidates, who are both battling for an uphill shot at unseating their parties’ front-runners.
The Republican race — a crushing defeat for front-runner Donald Trump — was called just moments after polls closed at 9 p.m. Eastern time.

Ted Cruz gained ground on Donald Trump with a victory in Wisconsin.

At a victory speech shortly after the contest was called, Cruz predicted his win would mark a “turning point” and a “rallying cry” in the topsy-turvy Republican race.
“Here in Wisconsin, the hardworking men and women stood and campaigned tirelessly to make sure tonight was a victory for Americans everywhere,” Cruz said at a rally in Milwaukee.
“We’re winning because we’re uniting the Republican Party. Tonight is about unity, and tonight is about hope,” he added, before predicting the win would ultimately deliver the party’s nomination to him.

“Either before the convention in Cleveland, or at the convention ... together we will win a majority of the delegates, and together we will beat Hillary Clinton in November,” he said.
Cruz’s victory advances the increasingly aggressive effort to prevent Trump from securing the 1,237 delegates he needs before the party’s July convention to win the Republican presidential nomination outright.
Trump did not speak following his loss, but issued a harshly worded statement via his campaign.
“Ted Cruz is worse than a puppet, he is a Trojan horse, being used by the party bosses attempting to steal the nomination from Mr. Trump,” the statement read. “We have total confidence that Mr. Trump will go on to win New York, where he holds a substantial lead in all the polls, and beyond.”

Bernie Sanders beat Hillary Clinton in the Wisconsin primary on Tuesday.

Before Wisconsin, Trump led Cruz in the total delegate count, 737 to 475. Wisconsin’s 42 GOP delegates will be awarded to Cruz on a winner-take-most basis.
CLINTON, SANDERS AGREE ON DATE FOR NEW YORK'S PRIMARY DEBATE
On the Democratic side, Sanders — in front of Clinton 56% to 43%, with 85% of the state’s precincts counted — was poised to head into New York’s April 19 primary with enormous momentum, a message he touted at a victory rally in Wyoming, which holds a Democratic caucus Saturday.
“What momentum is about is that all across the country the American people are looking around them, and they understand that real change in our country’s history ... never, ever takes place from the top on down. It always takes place from the bottom on up,” Sanders said.

Donald Trump had only harsh words for Cruz after the GOP front-runner lost the Wisconsin primary.

The win was Sanders’ sixth in the past seven Democratic contests and will help him cut into the sizable lead in the delegate count held by Clinton, who did not speak following her loss but tweeted her congratulations.
Before the Wisconsin primary, Clinton led Sanders 1,712 to 1,011, including superdelegates. To win the nomination, a candidate needs 2,383.
Wisconsin’s 96 Democratic delegates will be awarded on a proportional basis.
