If you want to become enlightened it first starts with kindness towards yourself and others. As long as you are at war with yourself internally or others internally you can't really become enlightened.
So, practicing kindness both to yourself and others prevents strokes and heart attacks from anger. It also helps prevent panic attacks as well.
Moving towards kindness towards yourself and others also might include removing yourselves from people you have allowed to harm you whether they are relatives or friends. In order to become enlightened you must choose carefully who you associate with until you become strong enough in your kindness where it doesn't affect you so much to be around difficult people.
At a certain point in your evolution towards enlightenment you will be able to be around people that might have been harmful to you before because they will start listening to you.
You cannot really change anyone. But you can set an example by all your actions.
Just like you can take a horse to water but you cannot make him drink. You really cannot change anyone much at any age.
But, you can set your own example by your own life and help everyone around you by setting a good example for all who choose to notice.
