G5 Solar Storm hits tonight and could last 24 hours

Although the charged particles present no direct danger to people on the ground, they could have a devastating effect on electrical equipment.
Geomagnetic storms are classified on a scale of one to five. Initial indications are that the looming storm could reach the highest G5 level and last for 24 hours.

The last really serious solar Storm that I can remember hit in 1989 and knocked out a power plant in Canada and Auroras were seen as far south as Eureka, California at Humbolt University there at that time. A lot of damage was done to electrical equipment in that Solar blast to hit Canada and it knocked out power to parts of Canada and the Northeastern U.S.
