And Trump completely misjudged what China would do. China has been around for 6000 years now in one form or another. So, it's not some Johnny come lately like Trump is. Because of this 6000 years experience of dealing with competitors and rivals like the U.S. and specifically Trump. Trump has likely made the single biggest mistake of his presidency messing with China through a Trade War. Hopefully, he hasn't destroyed ALL the Good Will built up since Nixon and Kissinger began economic Trading with China in the 1970s.
So, when Tariffs move January 1st (or thereabouts) from 10% to 25% on many different goods you likely aren't just going to see little drops of 300 to 500 in a day in the DOW and you likely are going to see 1000 point drops instead more commonly. Because China really has no reason to give into ANYTHING that Trump wants because of the way as a country that it has ALWAYS done business already for 6000 years.
Trump's mistake was starting the Trade War. Because of this what Trump started, China will likely finish, much to the detriment of the U.S. economy.
China is completely a top down economy. Though Trump wants ours to be this way too, it isn't. In China they don't really care if they lose 100,000 people to a trade war. Here in the U.S. that would be a political disaster for ANY president. So, possibly expect Trump to be impeached for his destruction of the U.S. economy caused by his completely unnecessary Trade War with China.
