The easiest way to think about this is if Putin were Al Capone the big Mafia Boss of the 20s and 30s. Can you imagine someone like this in charge of a country?
Because for someone like this you are either of him, by him or for him, or you are dead or poor.
There is no other alternative as long as he rules Russia.
Yes. He does control the media so in effect the Free Press does not exist in Russia anymore at all. And with the Assassination of Nemtsov there is no one leader for Russian people who want free speech and democracy and human rights to rally around now. They only have a martyr. It's hard to rally around a martyr for good results (unless it is Martin Luther King, Ghandi or Jesus or others like this).
So, unless you are a member of the Putin mob just like the Stalin mob and the Hitler Mob before him, you have no future in Russia and might already be dead or soon to be like Nemtsov.
Is this a new beginning for Putin or is this the beginning of the end for him? Audacious assassinations like Putin was responsible for here can easily go either way now in Russia.
