Tax Identity Theft: More People Have Refunds Stolen,...

  1. If you are interested in not being a victim here there are some ways to prevent you being victimized. First, never file your taxes online. 2nd don't ever get a tax refund, let it ALWAYS roll over until your next years taxes. This way you don't have to worry about losing your tax refunds. So, if you have a way not to file online don't. We never file online and use the Federal waiver form to always send our taxes through the mail instead. It's sort of funny how much safer sending your taxes through snail mail is much much safer. But, what you might give up is your refunds to rolling them over to your taxes next year instead. However, if you still need your refunds now you can still file through snail mail as well. Though it isn't 100% that you will be protected from others filing your taxes and getting your refund, if you haven't ever filed online people likely won't have your information (like Social Security number, names, addresses etc. ) They likely wouldn't have that information if you hadn't already filed Federal taxes online the previous year.  So, don't file online anymore so maybe you will be safe from now on.

I have always thought filing taxes online was a serious accident waiting to happen for the American people. Now it just shows I was right all along and hundreds and then thousands of people are getting ripped off this year (and the next and the next). The Internet is not secure now nor will it ever be.

And the people most likely to commit this crime live in countries where they will never ever be punished for doing this because there are no laws against doing this there. So, unless they moved here to the U.S. they will stay free the rest of their lives enjoying your tax refunds. So, protect yourselves because our government can't really. At least not from this.
