- www.imdb.com/title/tt1661199 CachedDirected by Kenneth Branagh. With Cate Blanchett, Lily James, Richard Madden, Helena Bonham Carter. When her father unexpectedly passes away, young Ella finds herself ...My wife and a friend of hers wanted to see Disney's latest (non-cartoon) Cinderella and I decided to tag along because of a wonderful Rolling Stone review I read about it. It was something like "Spectacular" "Beautiful" "Amazing" and yes it is all of that and more. This stars Lily James and Cate Blanchette and another start of Downton Abbey that plays the part of Daisy as one of the step sisters. It is a much more adult version of this story so as an adult you feel like you just saw a more adult movie that is sort of like Bambi in that you see Cinderella's mother and father die and the evil stepmother character is developed and you understand more why she is the way she is too.Basically, life is hard when you lose two husbands one right after the other so a good way to put this is "The Stepmother's nuts" so it is hard to feel that angry at her except for the way she treats Cinderella. However, I really loved how well all the main characters are developed in this movie so they aren't just sort of undeveloped cartoon cutouts like in the cartoon movie except for Cinderella. So, you see people's motivations more and it is like you are dealing with real people and not like a fairy tale except for the "Fairy Godmother". Good movie for all ages of people that wish to see this wonderful story retold once again.
